Reshaping Reality with Photoshop

We see it every day: Magazine models with plastic skin and impossible bodies; real kids with unreal eyes, drooling over factory-produced treats. But tools are just that–tools. They can be used for unworthy or mundane-but-useful tasks. Or they can be used to make marvels that never could have existed without them. Photoshop’s magical box of tools has allowed human imaginations to soar. The best compositions exaggerate, juxtapose, and blend real life to comment upon it, glimpse what might be beneath it, or to simply tease ourselves (see Swiss photographer John Wilhelm’s loving, whimsical family pics below). Here are some of my favorite reality-reshapes.

Competitors, like Affinity Photo, now provide similar ā€œwowā€ at a fraction of Photoshop’s cost, fueling the temptation to tune up mundane images. Thanks for the excellent tour, Mitch!
