We live in a time where letting your light shine on yourself has become an art form. Selfies, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, etc., etc…. You get the idea. So many people today get their self-esteem from how many people like their selfies and social media representations of themselves. Then there is the uniquely 21st century “humblebrag” (an oxymoron if ever there was one) to surreptitiously shine the light on yourself. (Insert eye roll here!)
C. S. Lewis understood that this is not what Jesus meant when He taught His disciples to let our good works be the light that shines upon our Father in heaven—who gives us the grace and ability to accomplish those good works.
So be the light that shines on God—not on yourself.
Live it out this week. Look for ways to shine the light on God and on others. And always give glory to God for the things that He accomplishes through you.
Father, teach us to always shine the light on You and on Christ as we live our lives for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I haven’t heard of “humblebrag.” Is that another way of saying “false modesty”?

Sort of, Liz. From Dictionary.com: “An ostensibly modest or self-deprecating statement whose actual purpose is to draw attention to something of which one is proud.”

That’s what I thought. I think “humblebrag” is a good word for that behavior.

Well, Matthew 5:41 does include the words “extra mile,” Rudy. And Acts 17:13 does mention Berea, but the words “I can do all things” are from Philippians 4:13.

And why is it your think I follow blindly? Btw, “Christianity” is the common term for the teachings of Jesus, and so, in that sense, Jesus was not only a Christian (“Christ-like”), but the first and only perfect Christian who ever lived.

The light of God exists in every creation. Man probably loses its glow through his many actions. One should attempt in keeping that light bright within us so much that other’s can also find their way in that light.Amen🙏

Hi Mitch,
That is a battle in our culture, right? In lots of ways the Lord is working hard to humble America believers. That makes the pruning process even more important because maybe it’s too much about me and not Jesus.
In Christ,
Gary

Yep. American culture has, in many ways, grown into a cult of individualism.

Not that I claim to be immune to its influence, btw. Far from it.
