Dogs and Cats Explained

Dogs and cats are as different as day and night. But like day and night, we must have both or the world as we know it will cease to revolve.

Great stuff, Mitch. Ever since I married a woman who was deathly allergic to cats, I’ve exclusively been a dog man. I like that they like me, whereas cats could care less.

Yesterday one of our dogs had a run in with a Texas horned lizard. Did you know those critters defend themselves by squirting blood up to five feet out of their eyes?!?! Seriously. And then it played dead. I thought it was dead, so I put it in the dumpster. After coming in the house and reading up on the weird creature on Wikipedia, I realized that it probably wasn’t dead, so I went back out to the dumpster to set it free. It had already set itself free — hopefully nowhere near our yard.

Right! According to Wikipedia, only 8 varieties of the horned lizard, also known as horny toads, have the capability of squirting blood. The Texas horned lizard is one that does, and this one had the markings of that variety. I know, because I took a picture when I thought it was dead. 😕

Here’s something even grosser: the Wikipedia article said that some of these blood squirting lizards can spew blood out of their mouth, as well as their eyes. Eew eew eew!!

Hah! Funny story, Linda. In SoCal I used to catch and pet “horny toads” (same thing, I think) as a kid, but I never got squirted. I probably wasn’t perceived as much of a threat.

Yes, horny toads are a common name for the horned lizard, according to Wikipedia. Only certain varieties of horned lizards/toads have the ability to squirt blood, again per Wikipedia. So presumably your southern California variety did not have that option, lol.

But the one in our yard certainly did! Our poor dog had blood sprayed all over the top of her two white front paws. I checked and she had no injuries, so I am sure it came from the Texas horned lizard. Creepy, but fascinating creature!

  7. Dogs will love you unconditionally. Cats want to see your resume.

Some of the greatest writers preferred cats: Mark Twain, Hemingway, Poe, Alcott, Bradbury, Dickens—you think it’s because cats don’t need “walkies” which means a writer isn’t always interrupted by having to take the dog out?
