My Featured Blogger this week is Kate Duff of A Thousand Bits of Paper. Kate is a poet, writer, and published author who lives in Australia. About her writing, she says it’s “a ‘song line’ or ‘dreaming track,’ a path across the land or the sky, according to the aboriginal people of Australia.” Her blog is her song line, her dreaming track “which follows (her) through life.”
Kate’s song line flows from the lyrical to the pragmatic to the abstract. But whatever form it takes, it always speaks to us,
Always reminds us of our own dreaming tracks.
I was consuming unwisely
Trying
To eat a life that I couldn’t have
But I wanted so bad
I didn’t realise in my search for a highlight high
True meaning doesn’t come in the form of highlights
Only epiphanies
And it can’t be eaten like that hot cross bun
A piece of chocolate
Or an entire dinner
For one
It comes in moments
Where the dogs hum across the paddocks chasing each other
The plate
Slippery and warm as it slips through your fingers
Stack it to dry
Picked flowers from the garden
And watching the storms dance across the horizon
All I needed was home
Not the house surrounding me
But the house where my spirit awaits
Every second
Until I ask
“Will you come play with me?”
And we walk together
Muddy boots and dam swims
Laughing as the dogs join in
And the rain begins again softly

Thank you for sharing this, it’s beautiful! Can I ask what should one do to be a featured blogger/poet on your blog?
Thank you so much. Kindest regards, Gregoria

Hi Gregoria. It’s a pretty subjective process. I only do one Features Blogger a week (currently at least), and try to mix things up, avoiding repetition in gender or nationality. But I also sometimes choose someone because of the current relevance of a particular post they’ve written. I don’t seek out guest blogs, but did publish one recently. I could see how it might work as a pandemic-related piece and had her rewrite it accordingly.
