You Know What They Say

“You know what they say…” I’ve heard all my life,

and I’ve often wondered just who They is,

to know so little and stir up such strife–

without them the world would be in bliss.

Then it happened one day as I travelled up north

that I stumbled upon a town called Rumor.

It seems I’d gotten completely off course

and by now was lacking my usual humor.

While there, I stopped at the Whispering Inn

and met a guileless waitress named Evy.

Not Eve, like Adam’s girlfriend,

but Ev as in never and lever and heavy.

I learned as she chattered and slid me a beer

that her name was something-something-or-other.

I think it was, “Evy Thingyahear,”

but I couldn’t be sure. Then I ordered another.

She told me that every passerby

had something important to reveal.

“I learn so much, oh, my, oh, my!”

she said with gullible, gleeful zeal.

“And of course, I just have to communicate

such terribly, horribly meaningful facts!

Do you have a truth to reveal today?”

“Yes, I do,” I said. (Now I can’t take it back.)

Then I told her, “The earth is made of soap–

scientists now are completely sure.”

Then she clapped and said it filled her with hope

to learn that the world was perfectly pure.

As I left, the barkeeper beckoned me near

and whispered (so that’s why it’s called Whispering Inn),

“Hey, don’t believe Evy Thingyahear–

better find out where those facts have been!”

That night on TV: “They say Earth’s Made of Soap!”

And at once I could finally clearly see.

How could I ever have been such a dope?

Yes, I finally knew–it’s true–

They is me!

  1. LOL, >groooooooan<
My grandmother used to say "They say…" all the time, and would get so annoyed when I'd always ask who "They" are.

  2. Ha! Very cute, Mitch. Well done. I think I actually work at the “Whispering Inn.” One of the perks is that you get to know people and to hear their stories. One of the drawbacks is that…… you get to know people and hear their stories. 🙂

  3. Mitch, I think that they (or we) are all part of the same club. So, any idea when we (uh, they) might get our membership cards? I just hope there’s benefits. 😀

    Wonderful, creative post!
What we often find in the world of church leadership (sometimes the hard way) is that the real meaning of the phrase, “… they say,” is, “This is my opinion, but I don’t have the courage to own it.”

  11. Very well presented. The facts are there and hidden is the truth. The talent carries through the word. And “is it not so,” they say.
