Popular Idea, Unpopular Word

Shock Words: What confuses me (and is left-handed humorous), especially with screenwriters. They love to show they’re macho so prove it with shock words (profanity). Thing is, everyone is different alike. They all use the same shock work. I have seen table reads and movies where there may be five people in a room, all mad, and all using the same shock words. Just who do they think they’re impressing by all being different alike? It is used so often, it really is no longer a shock. Seems like those who want to be macho should look around and find a different shock word so they can truly be different. BTW, it is interesting that the shock words all center around the center part of the body. Hmmm… Strange people, they.

Great quotes! Really glad I’ve gotten to know the Judge a little bit. Talk about hospitality…and grace. Wow.

so true. It would be nice if it worked the other way – the thing disappears and then word is unneeded.

Oh my yes. Amen. This will preach.

Good post. I especially like the line about pride being a “clever chameleon”.

A marvelously moving piece, Mitch. Most sincerely.

Paul’s remarks about sin at the end of Romans 7 came to mind as I read through these sobering quotes. He hated the sin at work within himself, but the constant of temptation was right there with him just the same. Such glorious hope he presents at the beginning of Romans 8: “There is NO condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (emphasis added). Hallelujah!

One of my favorite quotes on the topic of the sinfulness of Man,
“There is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of hell, but the mere pleasure of God.” By the mere pleasure of God, I mean His sovereign pleasure, His arbitrary will, restrained by no obligation, hindered by no manner of difficulty, anymore than if nothing else but God’s mere will had in the least degree, or in any respect whatsoever, any hand in the preservation of wicked men one moment. ” Jonathan Edwards, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”

When I visit this site I never walk away without feeling ‘the power of story’
and the peace that comes from the message. Many thanks..

Yes, sin is still sin, no matter how cleverly it is disguised. Made me think of the Scripture that says Satan himself appears as an angel of light – no horns or pitchfork!

Exactly. Horns and pitchforks are for bulls and farmers, Lucifer is our smooth-talking best buddy.

Yes! If only more people understood that.

Satan will never come directly at you as he is, a fallen angel. Instead, he will come at you sideways, all clean and polished, speaking words that seem to be rational and understandable. He will come in a guise that engenders trust, and that is what we must always bear in mind when dealing with the world.
