The Ugly Time

img_01891

I used to consider

late autumn

with its leafless trees

and sullen skies

the ugly time

But then I grew up

and came to understand

its barren beauty

how it saw the loss and longing in me

and sent its moons

to make tunnels through the clouds

and its shivering breezes

to whisper, Yes, we know

but Christmas is coming

Your “Ugly Time” is beautiful. You are a maestro at setting tone.
    “leafless trees” “sullen skies”
    “sent its moons
to make tunnels through the clouds”

Such as this is why I love poetry.

    Mitch,

You are the ‘realest’ poet ever. All of your
work, both poetry and prose, and praise,
(and movies, too,) is top shelf.

  10. I teared up a little (in a good way), and I don’t tear up easily.  Splendid prose poem.

I always notice the tree down the street. Sometimes it radiates freshness with its green leaves. Then with the onset of Autumn, they blossom into beautiful golden and wither away slowly leaving behind the gloomy trunk waiting for his next companions.
