Pride

Religious war

Any ideology (religious or atheistic) that requires you to kill those who disagree with you, or even to merely hate them, is a lie. Its roots are found not in the words “You shall have no other God” (Exodus 20:13), but in the words “You shall be as God” (the Serpent’s advice in Genesis 3:5). The seed of the forbidden fruit is pride, and its attraction is not the “knowledge of good and evil,” but the desire to decide for oneself, through self-interest, what is good and what is evil, to place oneself on the throne of God.

We have become so vitriolic in our hatreds, whether pro- or anti-Trump, Kaepernick, NFL, genders, ethnicity, religious persuasion or immigration status, there is little room for dialogue. What is profound, is that Love can conquer all this chaos, when we allow the Spirit to work in our life. I am in a church where I see this multi-racial, multi-national synthesis – because of God.

This reminds me of something Anne Lamott wrote, “you can safely assume you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out God hates all the same people you do.”
