Magnum Opus

I feel a sense of connection to great artists when I view their work.

I feel an even deeper sense of connection to the ultimate Artist when I view His work.

Creation doesn’t limit or “contain” God. But it does manifest his character “in the same sense that the arrangement of furniture in your apartment is a manifestation of your will” (Dallas Willard). Nature reveals God’s aesthetic, his beauty. And when I look upon creation, I hear him whispering, “You too were made by me. And if you remain true, you, more than any of these, will reveal Me.”

The heavens declare the glory of God.” ~Psalm 19:1

“This same God is at work in us.” ~1 Corinthians 12:6

Amazing that beauty itself has an impact on our attitude and disposition without logic or reasoning. No. Beauty can go straight to the heart. The Great God Who made us, knows how to communicate with us, if we just let Him.

  4. Beautiful, Mitch! It is my deepest desire to know God and make Him known. Right now I am working toward that end by writing. My blog (seekingdivineperspective.com) had been showing dwindling views and “likes,” and I was at a point where I was praying about whether I should set it aside and devote all of my writing time to my books. Then, out of the blue I was stunned to get a “like” from someone of your caliber! I’m still pretty new to blogs, and I have no idea how you found mine, but now I’m thinking maybe God is telling me to keep writing it for now. (Were YOU revealing Him to ME?)
God bless you in all you are doing for Him – and all that He is doing through you.

Dallas Willard is one of my favorite thinkers. Tell me, have you ever read anything by A.W. Tozer, friend?

In awe, I admire God’s magnificent creation, from the atom to the universe we see perfect harmony organized precisely how it needs to be. Sometimes that very observation has caused me to wonder how the Master could want to listen to me, but through your writing today, God has given me the missing piece.

  10. I love you thoughts. Too many people miss the glory of Our Creator. All the more reason to pray for them.

Oh my goodness! It’s Van Gogh looking at what will become his Starry Night. When I teach art, this is ‘the one’. I can’t begin to tell you what this ‘real’ photo means. Where can I get this photo to use with my classroom?

    Hi Mitch,

We see so little of God’s handywork. Can you imagine what we can’t see yet?

  13. I wonder what we mean by god? There are certain definitions I can happily live with and many I can’t. Speaking from the UK and the good old Church of England I can report that things have changed a great deal in 50 years. I was never a believer in the christian god and yet always got and still get much from the beauty of the Book of Common Prayer, Ecclesiastes, the beauty and silence of ancient churches, a monastic garden.

In response to your statement about what you believe, Zeno, I think the answer to your opening question would be, “Not the same thing.” I do believe in “the christian god,” the creator revealed in Christ’s words and character (John 14:9). Like you, however, I also greatly appreciate those beautiful and transcendent things that reflect our creator.
