Whatever it takes not to “think less of myself” but to “think of myself less”, as someone once said.

  3. “For the mind set [or simply “attention”] on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (NASB)

IIIIIIII’d say that caption takes some interpretive freedom. It’s generally a true judgment, I’d say (caveats granted), but it occludes as much as it illuminates, especially since the spirit/flesh distinction is not the same as the God-self distinction.

I suppose I’m sort of a stickler for the original languages, which is why I get so finnicky about these things. :-\ Sorry to be that guy.

Point taken, Gregory. It’s from The Message, which is not a translation per se, but an interpretive paraphrase. There are passages in The Message I find illuminating, but many I don’t. I do like this one, but freely acknowledge that it is a reflection on Paul’s words, not a direct translation of them.

  7. For to be carnally minded *is* death; but to be spiritually minded *is* life and peace. (Romans 8:6 KJV) The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. (NIV) Quite the bend in the syntax. 🤔 I like it Mikie, I like it!
